White noise is the reference point everyone else is measured against: equal energy at every frequency, from the lowest rumble the speaker can manage up to the top of your hearing. That is why it is the default choice for masking a noisy room, testing a signal path, or covering the gaps in a quiet house at night.

What white noise actually is

A white noise signal is random, and its randomness is spread evenly across the spectrum. Take any two frequency bands of equal width — 100 to 200 Hz and 10,000 to 10,100 Hz, say — and each contains the same average power. The name is borrowed from white light, which is a roughly even mix of visible wavelengths.

Because human hearing does not weight frequency bands evenly, flat on a meter does not mean flat to the ear. We hear roughly in octaves, and each higher octave in a white signal covers twice the bandwidth of the one below it, so it carries twice the energy. That is why white noise sounds distinctly bright and hissy rather than neutral, and why pink noise is usually preferred whenever "balanced" is the goal.

What white noise sounds like

Most people describe it as a steady hiss: an untuned FM radio, a fan on high, air escaping a nozzle, or the sound between stations on an old television. There is no pitch, no beat, and no pattern to latch onto, which is precisely what makes it effective at covering other sounds. Unlike a recording of rain or a fan, a generated signal never loops, so there is no repeat point for your ear to start anticipating.

What people use white noise for

  • Sleep and sound masking: covering traffic, a snoring partner, thin walls, or a hotel corridor. A steady floor of sound stops sudden noises from standing out sharply enough to wake you.
  • Focus in open-plan spaces: raising the ambient level so that nearby speech becomes unintelligible. Intelligible speech is far more distracting than the same sound level of undifferentiated noise.
  • Tinnitus relief: a low-level broadband signal can make internal ringing less prominent by giving the auditory system something external to attend to.
  • Audio and speaker testing: the simplest way to confirm that a signal path passes the full bandwidth and that both channels behave the same way.
  • Dithering and DSP work: white noise at a very low level is the standard dither signal when reducing bit depth.
  • Infant settling: widely used, but keep the level conservative and the source well away from the cot.

White noise vs pink and brown noise

How to download white noise as a WAV file

Choosing a safe listening volume

Almost every "which noise should I use" question turns out to be a loudness question. Broadband noise is unusually easy to set too loud, because it has no peaks or transients to make the level obvious. Start quieter than feels right, then raise it only until it just covers whatever you are trying to mask. For all-night playback, a level you could comfortably talk over is a sensible ceiling, and headphones deserve more caution than speakers.

Each output sample is drawn independently from a uniform random distribution between −1 and ±1, at your device's audio sample rate, with the left and right channels generated separately. Is white noise safe to sleep with every night?

For most adults, yes, provided the level is moderate. The usual guidance is to keep continuous overnight playback at conversational level or below and to place the speaker away from your head rather than beside your pillow. For infants, paediatric guidance is more conservative still: keep the source across the room and the level low. Any masking sound loud enough to be uncomfortable is too loud, whatever its colour.

What is the difference between white noise and static?

Practically none, at least in origin. The hiss from an untuned analogue radio or a detuned TV is broadband noise generated by thermal and atmospheric randomness, which has a roughly flat spectrum — the same spectrum this generator produces deliberately. The difference is that a generated signal is clean and consistent, with no drifting stations bleeding through it.

Does white noise actually help concentration?

It helps by masking rather than by soothing. A steady broadband sound raises the noise floor of a room so that intermittent sounds — a conversation two desks away, a door, traffic — no longer stand out sharply against silence. Many people find pink or brown noise less tiring for this over several hours because white noise puts a lot of energy in the region the ear is most sensitive to.
