Pink noise is the working reference signal of audio engineering. Its power falls at 3 dB per octave, which means every octave carries the same total energy. Because human hearing groups frequencies roughly by octave, that tilt is what makes pink noise sound balanced from top to bottom where white noise sounds bright.
What pink noise is
In a pink noise signal the power spectral density is inversely proportional to frequency — hence the alternative names 1/f noise and flicker noise. Double the frequency and the power per hertz halves, a 3 dB drop. Since each successive octave is twice as wide as the one below it, the two effects cancel and the energy per octave stays constant.
That property turns out to describe a great deal of the natural world. Rainfall, wind, a busy waterfall, the fluctuation of tides, even the long-term spectrum of orchestral music all sit close to a 1/f distribution. It is the reason pink noise is consistently described as the most natural sounding of the noise colours.
Pink noise for speaker and room calibration
Almost every room-tuning procedure assumes pink noise. Playing it through a system and measuring the result with a real-time analyser or a measurement microphone shows you the combined response of the speakers and the room, because the source spectrum is a known reference against which deviations stand out.
- Level matching: play pink noise through one channel at a time and match SPL at the listening position to balance a stereo pair or a surround array.
- Room-mode hunting: broadband pink noise excites the whole low end at once, making standing-wave peaks and nulls audible as you move around the room.
- System check before a session: a few seconds of pink noise through the rig catches a dead driver, a flipped polarity, or a channel imbalance before anyone records.
- Live sound ringing out: pink noise through the PA reveals which bands are most likely to feed back.

Outside the studio, pink noise is the usual recommendation for anyone who finds white noise fatiguing. The gentler high end makes it easier to leave running for hours, and it masks conversation effectively because much of the energy sits in the range where speech carries.

How this generator makes pink noise
Filtering white noise to a precise 1/f slope in real time is not trivial. Harmonoise uses Paul Kellett's refined filter method: a bank of six one-pole filters with carefully chosen coefficients, summed with a small proportion of the raw white input. It tracks the ideal 3 dB-per-octave slope closely across the audible band while remaining cheap enough to run sample-by-sample in a browser tab, with the left and right channels generated independently.

Is pink noise better than white noise?

Can I generate third-octave or band-limited pink noise?
